Pre-registering Youth to Vote Project

In 2018 the Sacramento County Youth Commission established the Pre-registration Subcommittee that focused on pre-registering youth to vote. Throughout 2018-19 the Commission worked with local school districts to enhance the outreach to their students and assisted with recognizing High School Voter Education Weeks (HSVEW). The Commission requested District Supervisors to advertise the project on their social media and school principals to send flyers and letters to students encouraging pre-registration. The Commission accepted resolutions from multiple school boards recognizing HSVEW in the fall of both 2018 and 2019.

The Commission worked with multiple entities to ensure the success of their project. The Commission partnered with the Sacramento Public Library to publish information on library websites and in local branches. An additional great resource and partner was the Sacramento County Registrar of Voters who provided the Commission with information, training and material for events.

The Commission participated in many outreach events including National Night Out (2018 and 2019), and the Cesar Chavez Youth Conference at UC Davis. The Commission also created a public service announcement video that is available for view on YouTube at Sacramento County Youth Commission Pre Registration PSA

The Commission is continuing their outreach efforts and is currently working on a #OurVoteNext social media campaign to raise further awareness. With this campaign the Commission is partnering with other county and state youth commissions to pass a resolution on a statewide level for HSVEW.
